Free sock knitting pattern: Ibiza Socks

Updated: Jan 23, 2022

I made these Ibiza socks during my vacation in Ibiza, and I still love wearing them. So I decided to write down the pattern.

The Ibiza Socks are knitted top down. The top of the sock is knitted in double rib. You knit the leg piece and the foot with the Lucina shell lace stitch. You knit the sole and the foot in stockinette stitch. These chunky socks are ideal to wear at home: the perfect home socks. The pattern is written in such a way that even a novice knitter can make these socks.

PATTERN

Sizes: EU: Small: 36 - 38, Medium: 39 - 41 Large: 42 - 44.

US sizes: small: 6 to 8, Medium: 8.5 to 9.5, Large: 10 to 12.

Cast on: 36 (36) 45 stitches on 5 mm needles. Use yarn that is for a needle size: 5 mm/ (US 8).

Cuff:

Work 5 rows: *knit 2, purl 2*. Repeat from * to * to the end of the round.

You’ll start now with the pattern of the Lucina Shell Lace (in the round). Multiple of 9 sts, 8-row repeat. When you use the magic loop method, you have, for example, 18 stitches (sizes small and medium) on each needle. When you use double pointed needles, make sure you divide the stitches on 3 or 4 needles.

Row 1: *K1, yo, k8, yo*, repeat from * to * to the end of the round.

Yo: (yarn over) wrap the yarn around the tip of the right needle from front to back, knit the next stitch

Row 2: *P2, k8, p1*, repeat from * to * to the end of the round.

Row 3: K2, *yo, k8, yo, k3*, repeat from * to * to last 9 sts, yo, k8, yo, k1.

Row 4: P3, *k8, p5* repeat from * to * to the last 10 sts, k8, p2.

Row 5: K3, *yo, k8, yo, k5, repeat from * to * to the last 10 sts, yo, k8, k2.

Row 6: P4, *k8, p7, repeat from * to * to the last 11 sts, k8, p3.

Row 7: K4, *ssssk, k4tog, k7, repeat from * to * to the last 11 sts, ssssk, k4tog, k3.

Ssssk: (Slip slip slip slip knit) is a left-leaning decrease method:

Slip the next 4 stitches to the right-hand needle on at a time knitwise, return them to left-hand needle one at a time in their new orientation, knit them together through the back loop. See another way (do in the video what they do with 2 stitches, with 4 stitches): https://youtu.be/nqBnrfiD97E

K4tog is a right-leaning decrease: knit 4 stitches together.

Row 8: Purl all stitches.

Repeat row 1 to 8, four times. Do you wanna make a short version of the socks? Repeat the rows 1 to 8, three times.

You’ll knit a total of 32 rows (four times).

Heel:

Now you are going to divide your stitches: the heel is worked back and forth in stockinette stitch across 16 (16) 18 stitches. Let the other 20 (20) 27 stitches rest on the needle.

Knit 9 (9) 10, turn, k1, p14 (14) 16, k1

Row 1: Knit all stitches.

Row 2: K1, p 14 (14) 16 stitches, k1.

Repeat row 1 and 2, 5 (6) 7 times. You’ll knit a total of 10 (12) 14 rows.

The next row is a RS row. The heel is now shaped with short rows:

Knit 10 (10) 11, ssk, k1, turn, slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in front, p 4 (4) 4, p2tog, p1, turn.

Ssk: (Slip slip knit) is a left-leaning decrease method: Slip the next 2 stitches to the right-hand needle one at a time knitwise with your yarn in the back, return them to left-hand needle one at a time in their new orientation, knit them together through the back loop.

P2tog: Purl two stitches together. See here how: https://www.garnstudio.com/video.php?id=225&lang=en

Row 1: slip the first stitch knit-wise with the yarn held in the back, knit to 1 stitch before the ‘hole’ from the last turn, ssk, k1, turn.

Row 2: slip the first stitch purl-wise with the yarn held in the front, purl to 1 stitch before the ‘hole’ from the last turn, p2tog, p1, turn.

Repeat row 1 and 2 until there are 10 (10) 12 stitches left on the heel.

The next row is RS row:

Now work in the round across all stitches again, while picking up stitches along the sides of the heel flap:

(Tip: put the stitches for the pattern of the Lucina Shell Lace on one needle.)

Sizes: Small and medium:

(For size large see below *large and follow that pattern.)

You’ll need 3 stitch markers, use for the beginning of the round a different colour.

Row 8: Knit to stm, stm, purl all stitches to stm, stm, knit to stm.

Toe:

The toe is worked in stockinette stitch and shaped with decreases. Divide the sts in an equal number on each side, do you use magic loop: on each needle 18 (18) 22 and 23 for the large (you’ll not have an equal number on your needles when your are knitting size L, you’ll make-up for that during the decreases).

The beginning is still in the middle of the sole sts.

Work the decreases for the sole on every other round:

Divide the stitch markers: you will decrease before and after the stitch marker, you’ll need 2.

Row 1: Knit to 3 sts before stm (you’ll have 9 (9) 11 sts on your left needle from the beginning of the round), k2tog, k1, stm, k1, ssk, knit across the instep sts to 3 sts before stm, k2tog, k1, stm, k1, ssk, knit to the end of round (4 sts decreased)

Row 2: knit all stitches.

Repeat rounds 1 and 2, a total of 5 (6) 7 times.

Now work decreases on every round:

Row 1: Knit to 3 sts before stm, k2tog, k1, stm, k1, ssk, knit across the instep sts to 3 sts before stm, k2tog, k1, stm, k1, ssk, knit to the end of round (4 sts decreased)

Repeat row 1 until you’ll have 8 stitches left on the needle.

Knit two stitches after stm:

Now use the Kitchener stitch to sew the toe together.

Have your stitches on each needle with right sides out. Working yarn attached in the back piece. Start: pull needle and yarn through st on front needle purl-wise, then pull needle with yarn through first st on back needle knit-wise. Tighten thread - you are ready to go.

Following 4 steps are being repeated:

  1. Go purl-wise into first stitch on front needle, pul yarn through, lift stitch off needle.

  2. Go knit-wise into next stitch on front needle, pull yarn through (leave stitch on needle).

  3. Go knit-wise into first stitch on back needle, pull yarn through, lift stitch off the needle.

  4. Go purl-wise into next stitch on back needle, pull yarn through (leave stitch on needle).

Repeat this until you have one stitch left, pull yarn through.

Tip! Take a look here for the Kitchener Stitch

Pull the yarn to the ws of the sock, wave in all ends
